The battle is now fiercer as the remaining four contenders in music reality show, Nigerian Idol head for the final showdown as a contestant would be eliminated today.
Last weekend witnessed vintage performances of some top 100 American Billboard hits of all time by the quartet of Joe Blue, Najite, Mercy and Stephen Onochie.
They needed more than just a performance to convince the judges made up of Jeffrey Daniel, Yinka Davies and Charly Boy were joined by West African Idol winner Timi Dakolo who prepared the audience with a superb rendition of his song ‘Cry’.
Joe Blue set the ball rolling in grand style with a subtle rendition of Adele’s Set Fire to the Rain and second performance full of dramatic flourishes of Amy Wine house’s hit, Rehab.
Najite was up next with a strong version of Alicia Keys’ song to the delight of the audience. She followed up with Rihanna’s ‘Umbrella’ accompanied with a choreographed dance routine.
For his part, Stephen Onochie who has been dubbed lover boy performed the classic love song, When a woman loves by R-Kelly ending it by presenting a bundle of white roses to Yinka Davies. This was followed by a choreographed version of Usher’s 2010 hit ‘OMG’. To wrap up the first round of performances, Mercy delivered Beyonce’s, Halo with a vocally powerful performance. Her last performance of the night led the audience and judges to their feet as she flawlessly delivered Amerie’s One thing.
She left the judges speechless and Charly Boy described her as the entire show.
The winner of the show who works away with a cash prize of $100, 000, SUV and music contract will be unveiled at a grand gala in April where A list international artistes are expected to attend.
